Minecraft randomly gave me a new spawnpoint, can't find my way back home

So I had been building an impressive house in minecraft, situated strategically above a large cavern, when I was killed by a stealthy skeleton archer while exploring said cavern.

When I respawned, however, I found myself in the middle of the ocean and sinking fast. I barely made it up to the surface alive to discover, upon much swimming, that none of the islands within my los were continental in size. My homeland was gone. Or, at least, it is far, far away.

Now I know beds are involved in spawn points, but I hadn't made one yet, and my spawn point had never changed thus far.  My original spawn point was close to where I ended up building my house, so I never bothered with it.

But now, with the possibility of never seeing my life's work again, I am pleading for help:

What happened and how to I return to my original spawnpoint/find my house?

Really sorry for your loss :/, but maybe you can get one of those programs that display an overview of the map, and use it to get back to your buildings, other than that i have no other ideas on how you could get back. Also, try this link: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Programs_and_editors . It is a list of programs that can give ya an overview of a map. Hope this helped, and I hope ya find your builds! Good luck!
