Minecraft.exe will not do anything

I am able to get this game to work on my older desktop, but it is very slow, so I was trying it on my newer laptop, a latitude d630 running XP pro, but it will not do anything. By that, I mean when I click on Minecraft.exe, I simply get the windows fail sound, and then it does nothing. I am using the client that is up on the site as of 9/19, have the current java ((Version 6 Update 21). So, does anyone have any advise to get this running? do I need to so something else with java?
I tried to run it under compatibility mode for 2000, but it gave me an error about a virtual machine if that helps at all

Go to compatability mode and
Go to compatability mode and reset it.
Update graphics card drivers from the website (not with windows wizard and even if they're the latest)
Update Java (even if it's supposedly the latest)
Re-install Java.
Ensure your running the right Java (Not sure wether you should have SDK or Runtime, check you have the right one though)
