My server is a 1.6 economy-based survival server. We have iConomy and chest shops, with the ability to buy/sell from shops, as well as create your own.
We have roughly 20-35 players on at all times with a good amount of friendly admin as well. Our server has been around for about four months, so we have many friendly and loyal players who often come on and we're always welcome to new players.
We have LWC, BigBrother, MCMMO, and offer free protection to everyone's buildings.
There is a wide variety of cities and towns to build in, and you are allowed to build whatever you wish, wherever you wish as long as it doesn't interfere with someone else's creation.
We are not whitelisted but we have a forum for people to use in order to get in contact with us and do many other things related to the server.
If you wish to do PVP, you can go to the Nether. There, you can join or make a clan, raid bases, defend your own base, and play hardcore PVP.
Our server is 24/7 and while some players have Skype, most of us prefer to use our server's Ventrilo channel.
The only mod we're strict about is X-Ray mod, and if you wish to use fly mod you can donate to the server (as much as you wish, doesn't matter) or be ranked high enough to use it.
