Mining Coal Doesn't Yield Coal

I'm trying to mine coal in alpha, but when I use my wooden axe on the coal ore it yields nothing. Any suggestions or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated so I can make torches (finally).

thanks, I double checked what I was using and I was actually using a hoe. I feel like an idiot, lol.
