My server isnt public

Hello, I wanna ask something, I will hold it short.
Well I made a server with MANY different softwares looked on minepedia,
I tried about 7 softwares... All are not public.
My friend says I need to port forward it, because if you dont it never gets
public. Well I tried, I downloaded it, all good, no problems.
But when I start it, it says:
[Simple Port Forwardings doesnt work anymore]
It doesnt start...
Im using Windows Vista I know it pretty sucks...
But there must be a way that can maybe make my server public?
Anyone please respond.

Router?
Do I 100% REALLY need a router? NO other way just NO NO NO NO NO NO!! other way?
Cause my router already have too much ports that it opens.
so if it cant be done without a router... sniff....
than I cant make my server =(

Youve downloaded something that portforwards your pc or whatever?
Youve gota port-forward trough your router not with any kind of program

GL with it, it isnt that hard.
but btw dont put an random port open because how more ports youve got open how more chanse you got that hackers can hack your pc
