new to minecraft smp server

where would i be allowed to build a small house n such on the server without stipping on anyones toes? i'm betting the answer is in that little book i lost when idied right after joining server the first time.

Victoria you can get a new rule book in the spawn area. They have a tote there with extra books there if it is not empty. Use a wood shovel, right click on one corner of land you want to claim then go to the other corner and right click. I still have not mastered it but do have some land claimed. Doing stuff on the server earns you claim blocks.
