newbie question

I was breaking down chests to relocate them. Everything in them spread everywhere so I just gathered what I could and placed them in the new chests outside, Did this about 2 or 3 times (lots o stuff) and then came back in again and the rest was GONE. WTF?
I will make note that nighttime came by then. So do items that drop disappear at night or after they have been dropped for so long. I had some good stuff that I lost.
Also, I have died many times in big ol caverns that I have discovered and died and lost all my gear as I could not find my way back to that place.
Any veteran tips on how best to find my way back to my explorations?

save some stuff
keeps some gear in a chest near your spawn so that you can use it when you die, similarly, try to not go to far from your spawn until you have collected some food and can therefore stay alive for longer.
If you have a mountain or something like that close to your spawn point, use that to mine, don't go too far.
