No Damage?

Hello,
I recently downloaded the server client and game from the minecraft.net website.
In the folders I got the minecraft.exe file and in the server folder I have all the server stuff.
the problem I have is, how do you enjoy damage in the game? I set "monsters=true" and I had one monster spawn, but he did no damage to me and I did no damage to him.
How do I make more monsters spawn? How do I enable damage?

The damage system has been disabled in smp by notch. Probably because monsters can't spawn yet (although the animals can, even though they are invincible :o ).
