People can't connect to my Minecraft server.

I have my server set up and it come up on the list of servers, but when i send the url to my friends it says connecting but it wont load the bar :/ after a while it says failed to connect the server is probably down :( any help?

Sounds like a firewall, port forwarding issue...or in rare cases extremely high latency.
