pistons how to build ??

greetings all jus the one question for now.
i have been on this game a week (yup am a noob) i have v1.0.0 do i need a mod or a different version to be able to craft pistons ?? i have watched the video`s on youtube n done all they do but when i put the required items in the table it won`t make them. please can someone tell me my error

Well, welcome to Minecraft. What do you mean 'it won't work'?
It may have been because you are not using a 3x3 crafting table. I don't know what other thing could've happened. I hope this can help solve your issue,
