The 1.4 of Minecraft will be release tomorrow, the 24th of October. So perhaps server admins are preparing for the release. Which may explain why the server is down at the moment.
You can download the mincraft.jar file and put it into your bin folder now if you can't wait. Play off line as a single player cool but then again, it is more awesome to play on line as well.

The minecraft session server is down, this means that no one can connect to any server, it does not mean that the servers are down. There are currently 2 people still on our server as they haven't logged out since everything broke.

Now it seems that anyone who is already logged into minecraft is fine, but if you do not already have minecraft open, then you cannot log in.

You will be able to get them from villages which are generated after the update, in the same way that you can currently get wheat from them.
