Problem collecting stone and other materials

I bought and downloaded the game not too long ago and was playing for a few weeks. Everything was fine and then I log on one day and I can't collect any Stone, Coal, Iron and so on. I looked for a solution to the problem and I couldn't find anything. I figured I could just ask on a forum. Anyone know what's going on?

By the looks of it you seem to be only mining by hand. You need to first craft some beginner tools to mine the bigger stuff. Here take a look at this: http://www.echidnatribe.org/Minecraft/crafting.php

Were you using tools to mine and then it just stopped working? Or were you just not using tools?
