I'm  relatively new to minecraft and my computer shut off unexpectedly earlier while i was playing, upon logging back on i was most distressed to find that my world had been deleted. well i went into my .minecraft folder and all of the world data appears to be there the client isn't able to read it however.

I tried opening it with MCEdit and got the error:
TypeError: argument 1 must be string or read-only buffer, not None
Anyone know a fix to recover my world?

the error seems to be with the level.dat

I can't help with world

I can't help with world recovery but the shut down was due to major overheating. usually either a bug or graphics card.

This will help avoid the problem in the future

I can't help you with recovering what you've lost although there is definitely a way to get some back, i've read online about some but I just thought I'd share with you all what i've done to at least help avoid this in the future somewhat.

open up notepad and create a batch file that will first copy the level.dat file to a backup folder of your choosing.  and then opens the game.  And instead of running your usual exe file to open the game, instead run this.  That basically means that every time you run the game, the level.dat file is backed up and you will only lose 1 session of game time at most.

to do this, open up notepad

type this

copy C:\Users\*user name*\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\saves\World1\level.dat C:\*wherever you want*\level.dat

*new line*

c:\*wherever minecraft is stored*\Minecraft.exe

save the file as RunMinecraft.bat   <-- make sure you put .bat instead of .txt

test it out, if it doesn't work make sure your directories are named and formed correctly

if u didnt have a folder

if u didnt have a folder backup...

the .minecraft/saves/worldx/ folder it usually has a backup of the level.dat. (ie. level.dat_old, level.bak etc depending on what editors you have used.)

in windows vista/7 u can right click the file > "restore previous versions" which pulls it from a system restore. thats if Sys restore is on. the one in xp almost never works.

i dont recommend it but in some cases if ur real desperate u can create a new world and copy the level.dat from that world and paste it into your broken world.
