Server Help..

Okay, so a friend of mine got me into minecraft.. well they had a server and now they shut it down because of cost. So me being the nice person I am.. I want to host my own server. I currently have a pc that is collecting dust.
SPECS:
Ubuntu
8GB DDR2 RAM
2.8ghz quad-core Phenom II X4
7200RPM Drive
Internet Connection: Verizon Fios: 30MB Down & 20MB Up
What do I do to start a server on the box? I've tried finding guides.. It's hard finding one for linux/ubuntu and how to install mods.
I want to create a server like we were use to. One that let us build in peace.

(Obvious answer here) Try googling or search youtube for 'minecraft server linux' or something.
