Ok so im trying to make a server this is what I did.
admins.txt I put my name in
server.txt

i clicked ENTER
console admins: TheMadCow
But it still said its down please tell me what went wrong

1. Yes you need the latest version of Java.
2. You don't need any commands if your running the server from your computer.
6. Yes.
7. No, leave players.txt alone, that simply says who's on your server.
8. No, it looks fine.

Ok, here's a clear step by step tutorial.
1. Start the server by running start_server.bat.
2. Make sure no errors occur.
3. Minimize the window.
4. Open your browser and go to http://www.whatismyip.com.
5. Copy your IP address.
6. Insert your IP below. (Remove < and >.)
www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?server=<YOUR IP>&port=25565
7. Open the World of Minecraft client. Login. At the bottom of the server window, insert the url you just made above.
8. Click go.
If that still doesn't work, please clearly say the error you are experiencing.

Ok i went to the www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?server=<YOUR IP>&port=25565 when I got there it said you cant connect to this server via this url anymore !... im pissed and i feel like an idiot... this is hard

1. Open your browser and go to http://www.whatismyip.com.
2. Copy the IP address it gives you.
3. Open notepad, paste that IP.
4. Copy the url below, paste it in notepad.
www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?server=YOURIP&port=25565
5. Copy the IP you got from the first site, and replace YOURIP in the url that you copied below, with your IP.
6. Copy the full new url, paste it into the url box of the World of Minecraft client, or navigate there using your browser.
Note: Your new url should look like the one below, but a different IP.

OK I did all of that and then I put Verifynames to false to try to go in I opened the RUN.BAT and tried to go on the server but it wont let me...

Are you running on a network with a router? Cause if so, you need to forward the selected port to the comp running the server. Hope that might help.

Have you done port forwarding? If not no player can connect to your server!

What command are you using to run minecraft?
What version of Java do you have?
If not:
Try going to http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?server=<YOUR IP>&port=<SERVER PORT>.
You can find your ip for that url by going here.
