I'm looking to start a server for myself and a few friends, keeping it private, connecting via hamachi as I am not in a position to have my ports forwarded.

I need someone to hold my hand on this one as I don't know where to start, yes I have spent hours already searching around online and reading tutorials so I have a slight clue as to what to do. Here's what I've got;
- Java currently at version 1.6.0_23-b05
- LogMeIn Hamachi at version 2.0.2.85
- WorldofMinecraft Client at version Current (Downloaded on the 12th Feb, 2011)
- Minecraft Server at version Beta 1.2_01
in my server.properties I set "server-ip" to my hamachi IP, I added the server to the World of Minecraft client using the URL trick "http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?ip=MY.IP.GOES.HERE&port=25565".
But when I attempt to connect my screen stays black on the client and in the server gui it says:
[INFO] Done! For help, type "help" or "?"
[INFO] Disconnecting /MY.IP.GOES.HERE:PORT: Protocol error
[INFO] Disconnecting /MY.IP.GOES.HERE:PORT: Protocol error

[INFO] /MY.IP.GOES.HERE:PORT lost connection
I've also tried without hamachi, changing server-ip to my local IP address (192.168.#.#) but I get the same results, has anyone got any clues as to why I am getting a "Protocol error". I have the server in offline and online mode, and using a non-paid for account, but have access to a proper minecraft account if need be.
And if this helps, I'm running Windows XP SP3 (Fully updated), specs are above recommended. If I get this working I'll get it hosted on a proper server, would that change anything (besides being able to have open ports)?
I'll keep this post updated as I go.
Wheres my spacing I double spaced the paragraphs : (

Account, may be a problem?

I was hoping to get a server up before buying a game that may or may not work, in other words no I don't have an account myself. I do though have a friends account available for testing though I'd rather not use it for testing if I didn't have to.

Thanks for helping me....
With my account, without having purchased the game using the world of minecraft client can still connect to servers so I doubt thats the issue.

Troubleshooting

Well I know the account isn't the problem, the client seems to be able to connect to other people's servers, so the problem is probably to do with the server.

Either the server and client versions are incompatible, in that case could someone link me to a place where I could get a working version.
Or I've setup something wrong somewhere along the line.

Bump

Bedtime bump, in hoping some mysterious hero will turn up and wave his wand of awesome and summon a solution.

Edit: I've tried using the newer World of Minecraft client with the server in offline mode, but I'm still getting the same "Protocol Error".
Edit 2: I changed the server port to 2703 as thats what it said the client was using despite what I put in the URL, then changed the server port to 2703 and the client at least ATTEMPTS to connect before going to blank screen and becoming non-responsive.

Server

I haven't got my server up so that'd be why you can't join, also I didn't tell anyone the IP, again because the server isn't up.

P.S. Has anyone figured out how to setup a server using the latest World of Minecraft client?

Well Well

Turns out the problem, as I assume, wasn't the server, but the client.

I found this video, which I followed and got working fine and dandy, but the worldofminecraft client still won't connect to my server using it.
