i was wondering if it was possible to change the player skin without purchasing using the World of Minecraft client?

Well i guess you can, go to "bin" and open "minecraft.jar" with winrar and then name your skin to "char" and replace to the one in your minecraft.jar and thats it i guess

I would not buy the game for a skin i would play the game cuase it's freaking awsome but i think it's weird to just for a skin but it's like every game the best availability comes with the game when you but it.

The only option available to non-Alpha players is to, as Oopyuman said, replace the char.png file in minecraft.jar. This doesn't quite do what you want though, as it merely replaces the default skin applied to all non-Alpha (or non-skinned) players. So you'll see your skin on everyone else (that doesn't have their own), but none of them will see yours, as you'll still be the default.
Minecraft Alpha is still only $13. Don't buy it for the skinning, buy it for the awesomeness that is Alpha :P

youll need to get a $50 vanilla visa gift card because its actually avout 26-30 at the exchange rate. this is curently the only way to get it without useing a regular creditcard/paypall.

Go into your mob file and put the skin in but rename it char.png you have to replace the other one :)
