Squids can spawn in 1 layer of water? Screenshots included!

I was making a huge moster spawner trap thingy and then the update came out, and when i spawned, i saw tons of squid!!!! The water is only one layer deep and i dont see how the squid can spawn! But heres a screen shot of my monster trap and the squid!
