Trouble joining servers

Hi everyone,
So I have no problem joining servers in my browser, but when I try and use the client it just loads a new random map. I've tried searching but haven't found anything. I'm on a mac, and my Java is up to date. Please help!

if your password has symbols in it it wont work. (anything but letters and numbers.)

this error is old and nearly nobody knows how to fix it
it can be:
1. your password and nickname are from your World of Minecraft account
and that doesnt works use minecraft account registration
2. your password and/or nickname are typed wrong
nearly evreyone does this
