trying to change paintings, plz help

so for the past 3 hours i have been trying to change the paintings in minecraft either through a texture pack or the minecraft .jar file.
but to edit either, i have to compress and unzip the files, and thats where the problem starts.
once i've unzipped either file they become useless and stop working, even after ive compressed and change them back to .jar, so does any1 have a way to get around this to edit the files?
(p.s. im on a restricted mac and cant run any downloaded programs, apps, or terminal unless they are .jar files)
