Ok, I downloaded cartograph but I have NO IDEA where to put the files... It says I'm missing MSVCP100.dll no matter where I put it. Can anyone help?
Second problem, I've gotten far enough to get a bucket and find lava, but when I try to gather the lava it won't work. I tried right clicking, left clicking, I tried with water, the only thin I haven't tried is milk. Can anyone help?

The first post, with the download links, in the Cartograph thread says you need the Visual C++ Redistributable. It has a link to it too.
Milk has no purpose yet. You'll have to either hax your inventory to replace the bucket with an empty one, or just make a new bucket.
Buckets can only pick up sources of water or lava. You can tell them apart from the rest because their texture is not flowing in any direction.

idk about the 1st problem, but all water/lava comes from source blocks. The source blocks are infinite sources of water/lava, and are the only blocks of water/lava that can be picked up with a bucket.
lakes/oceans of water/lava are a bunch of source blocks. usually you have to right click with an empty bucket to pick them up.
