What specs of a dedicated server would I need for an SMP server?

I'm wanting to start a professional SMP server with an established economy and building plans, but I'm not sure what specs I'll need to invest in. Can anyone help me out?

It all depends on the amount of users your server will have on. Lets say you have the default limit of 20 users and have around 15 users on; a player uses an average 32.7 MB of RAM, thus all 15 players will use around 500 MB of RAM, the server itself will take about 100 MB more. However if you plan to have a fairly large server I would recommend getting a server with either 1-2 GB of RAM.
I would recommend not getting a dedicated server, unless you have the money to. A good VPS will suite your needs perfectly. I would recommend buying a Linux VPS at the following sites:
