World of Minecraft client going straight to single player servers are online!

Ok i have two friends that are getting the same issue but slightly diferent one of them will login with the World of Minecraft client and it will say server list not found and go straight to single player and the other one actually gets the server list types in the URL which he is positive is correct and then clicks play but it goes straight to single player.
Please if anyone can help and tell me a fix ill walk them through it and try to get the problem resolved.

The World of Minecraft client only lets you go to Alpha servers listed on minecraft.net. You'll have to purchase the real thing (beta) to go to any other server or do anything other than build.

The client's doing the same to me atm (the latter of the two you mentioned). Im not sure why, I've tried adding it to my firewall's program exception list, but still no luck.
