Is there any way to connect to a private server using World of Minecraft client?

The person running the private server should send you the 'http://www.minecraft.net/play.jsp?server=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx' addres. Add this as a bookmark to your World of Minecraft client, and you're off ! :)
