World of Minecraft Client won't connect to Servers

I'm using vista, alas. The program SAYS I'm connected to the server I picked, but I don't get anything, it's just a normal randomly generated world in creative mode.
No people, nothing.
I checked the server in browser using Firefox, too, so it's not that I picked a bad server, either.

Im on windows7 I can't even get the servers to show... its just... blank!

Grey Screen
When I choose a server, it kinda loads, but then a grey screen shows, and never finishes loading. It shows the Switch, Reload, Screenshot, and Dump Level options, so I think it's on the right track, but nothing more happens. How do I fix this?
