WoM Newsletter! Issue #8: World of Minecraft Awakens
Happy 2015 everyone!
Well, it’d been a long hibernation period for all of us, and you know what? Sleeping really does drive you crazy sometimes. That’s due to change real sudden like and I’m here to get things jumping again as we all “awaken” to a new year!
Just a side note- for right now the newsletter schedule will be monthly (possibly bi-monthly later) depending on server activity, updates, etc.
Announcements:
The last few months of 2014 were a bit rocky as far as getting the new map for SMP ready. To recap, most of the employees at Bukkit walked out, leaving all the minecraft servers hanging right as 1.8 was released. Since then everyone has had to wait on new software to update. Spigot is finally out, but we are waiting to use Sponge for SMP, which is still pending.
A lot of players have asked whether World of Minecraft is “dead” because the server activity lately has been near zero. We assure you, we are far from gone and we are finally starting to get things rolling.
SMP
Survival Multi-Player has indeed been rather slow for awhile - with the exception of a few bursts of activity here and there. However, Pointystic and Nichbal have been extremely busy at /warp Tamriel; working on the city library, creating huge murals, and now a church!
If you haven’t been by to check out their progress, please do. It’s a treat taking a look at all the different things that are being added each day, plus you can help them out while waiting for the new map. Pointy has been offering diamonds in exchange for each stack of books donated to the library - which is still hundreds of books short from completion. Sounds like a nice trade and an easy way to fill up your transfer chest while you’re at it.
Now over to MrSnowGlobe to talk about NEXUS and what’s to come...
NEXUS
Hello and welcome to 2015!
NEXUS development was re-ignited about a month ago! Spudrus and I have been busy adding new features and improving existing ones. It has come a long way since our last update!
Fun fact: NEXUS has been in development for 11 months!
A few of the major changes:
- World Sizes can now be increased seamlessly
- Notes: World Sizes (at this stage) will be increased as users rank up. A special thanks to our Technical Wizard (Yenwood) for making this feature possible!
- Users can customise the blocks used in their world generation
- Notes:To clarify, the worlds are still flat worlds.
- Lots of optimizations!
- Notes: This enables us to increase the NEXUS population cap without compromising stability
- Custom World Greetings!
- Notes: We’ll let people discover this one for themselves (:
- Notes: We’ll let people discover this one for themselves (:
A few things on the horizon:
- Ranking System (Currently 6 Ranks, details will come when it is implemented)
- Detailed and Accessible WorldEdit Tutorial
- Schematic Importing (Currently 1 per user)
We’re aiming to have NEXUS ready for public testing again in the near future. If you want to help test, leave a comment or contact MrSnowGlobe!
Now back to Erik...CMP
All things (especially the good ones) come to end. To make way for NEXUS, we’ll sadly be taking down CMP by the end of this month. This doesn’t mean that all your hard work on CMP has gone to waste, though. If you want your buildings exported, send MrSnowGlobe a message, and he’ll get it done!
We thank all of you for playing on CMP, and we hope that you’ll have just as much fun on NEXUS!
As for the Lobby; I’m working on it. I promise. -Nolz

NEXUS is coming along nicely! Watching it go through all of it's stages of development has been a blast! I hope to share it with some of you others soon!

schematic import? WOOHOOOOO :) So i can finish one of my projects at nexus? nice!
I've been checking on the World of Minecraft website, and finally some worth content, worth commentating on. Anyways, i'd like to volunteer as tribute. :D I work like to help out with Nexus, so if you need me just send me a message on here.
Is there any news on maybe starting up a new clans pvp server, or is that done for good?
I think the idea was shot down because there was no balance between old vs new players. And people would just camp spawn.
If it were to be remade I'm sure it'd be part of the minigame section rather than a standalone server.
PvP is dead, unless everyone starts with like prot 4 and the highest things avaliable with gapples and potions. Those are the pvp servers that thrive now. Plus I don't think they'll want to let them start like that since it isn't WOMS style.
I'd love to do a pvp server but we don't have the resources at the moment.
(And most of my time is currently spent working on nexus)
I do prefer the style of working your way up from nothing.
Open world pvp is much better than arena imo because you can have raiding and trap building and all that cool stuff.
The idea of an open world pvp is appealing, but the fact of the matter is that no matter what there will be some form of spawn camping. Then there will be a group of elite players in control of most of the resources working together to kill the new players who have next to no resources. This allows for little room for the new players to develop. I remember my first time on the pvp server I spent over two hours getting out of spawn and getting a sword. I managed to kill one of the over-equipped spawn campers, and I took his loot, but then everyone was in a fuss calling ME names. Really pvp just seems to be a source of negativity in a lot of ways, and if it made a reappearance I wouldn't want to invest too much time in it.
If we are able to do open world pvp in the future I'd probably make new players immune to pvp for up to 3 days or something.
To give them a good chance to get started.
We have also done random teleport signs from spawn but they often didn't get used.
That's why you aren't supposed to give them the choice. When they start the game they have to pick a sign or they can't leave spawn.
Maybe I was just bad
What I mean is
Spawn is inaccessible for people who have joined the server before and left spawn. You can't even see into it once outside.
There are 4+ signs that designate which quadrant the player can teleport to. The player left clicks the sign to see how many players are in that specific quadrant, and how long each specific player has been alive.
Say the player clicks sign B.
"There are 3 players in this quadrant:
0.8hr, 16.2hr, 4.5hr"
"Are you sure you want to spawn here? Y/N"
The player has 3 seconds to click the sign again or they don't teleport out.
This player chooses to spawn in B. Obviously B1, B5, and B6 are bad spawns so they're ignored when the server decides where to place the player. So they'll spawn in either B2, B3, or B4 with the designated items in their inventory.
It'd also probably help if each player had their own set of respawn points in the map, designated randomly by the server. They'd learn to memorize where each spawn was and have to plan around defending their base or whatever.
Here's to hoping Sponge is done soon!
nexus is the one planned thing that i'm excited about the most, i can't wait to see what it's like
If we were to do pvp, I see this as a fairly even way of doing it: you could do 4 factions, divide the entire map into quadrants with the area around spawn being non pvp (could be used as a meeting place for discussions that way as well). then players get divided up randomly onto teams when they log in for first time. Give each team 1 200x200 "capital city" a good distance from spawn that they get tp'd to and the capital is immune to attacks more often than x times per day. Also, to keep ppl from camping other team's areas, you can only gain life by potion or gold apples while in enemy territory. that way you cant just slaughter the cows of the enemy to survive. I would also limit the world border to something large but still far smaller than what it is now to prevent teams from just moving super far away into the distance.
The issue with this plan is either
A; people get to choose which faction they join and suddenly one is stacked with all the "best" players and no one else plays because of the incredibly unfavorable odds.
Or
B; People are randomly assigned a faction and when they are forced to join one they don't like, they don't play again until the next pvp cycle.
Great newsletter as always Erik! This post may have gotten a little off topic... just a little lol
I call running the PVP server. By running, I mean killing people on.
I didn't say it was a perfect plan art. No such thing in pvp, but I figure that it would at least be close to fair and even. And if we do cycles like you suguest it would keep it from getting to out of hand.
Well, I'd imagine the closest to perfect a pvp server could get would be if it were modeled after the board game. What's it caled? Risk I think.
Once a faction gains enough control over the world they win, and a new cycle starts with a different teamset.
Winning team gets something neato in SMP or something to make it not a completely pointless thing to do.
Although some players could get really overpowered, it wasn't that hard to avoid them if necessary. The clans plugin that we had with a basic spawn seemed really fun to me. Me and some friend all made our own clan and geared up in no time. Although it was always a bummer when you lose all your stuff to spuds, its part of the game and makes pvp worthwhile to play. PVP was always fun to play on a bit when you were tired of building in SMP and wanted to do the fighting aspect of Minecraft, something one doesn't always get in a purely SMP style server like World of Minecraft. I would like to see the format of the last PVP map come back if World of Minecraft decides to do another PVP map once 1.8 comes out. Maybe some mini-games too?
A Stand alone PvP server is not on the table. Even when we have a PvP server up, people still preferred SMP. Now, lets keep this post on topic.
Me and a few freinds have been talking about how we could make this work :) i I like the idea of a RISK styled pvp map
as you gain land...you can call in more reinforcements.
or something.. dont know.
Im thinking it woudl work off the team scoreboard system.
After say..? 3 people are in the land area for a team.
it woudl start a countdown.
Once the countdown is complete, the land permanently belongs to that team. but, if there are atleast 3 of the other team in the land...or any of 2 types of teams.
the timer would stop for both teams. Only 1 team can be in a land area for the timer to countdown.
We've been triing to figure out how to make that work in a minigame enviroment.
Anyway, good job on the newsletter Thanks for keeping us up to date on eveyrthing going on. Im very curious about the nexus idea and will continue to follow its progress.
Once its avail. for public, i'll send out a newsletter to muy community as well letting them know to come check it out :)
Hello,
I haven't been keeping track very well but are the servers still down? When I log in to play it says the servers are out of date.....I'm just making sure I'm not going crazy.
just downgrade mc to play 1.7.10 and it will work fine.

Great job on the newsletter Erik! I would definitely like to help MrSnowGlobe with the public testing!
