Apparently I'm going to be leaving World of Minecraft.  It's a shame - you guys have a great server, likely the best of any I've built on.  However I have two general criticisms of your spectate/grief policies.

I've played Minecraft for a long time - but not for as many hours as a lot of people.  I'm more of a casual player, but I enjoy working on infrequent large projects.  I also like servers with actual terrain.  Over the past few months most servers have moved away from having terrain to flat grass, so I was really happy when I came back to World of Minecraft a couple weeks ago.

After a few minor projects I worked for hours on the stair from bottom to top on main.  It's not a very artistic project, but I thought it was worthwhile.  And it showed that I was interested in contributing - certainly not a purposeful griefer.  I then moved on to making something I've thought about building for a long time - a flooded cave with an island in the center and some ruins on the island.  Apparently that was a mistake.

I read the rules - no random tunnels, no random blocks.  I made sure my cave wasn't near anyone's build (though it's hard to tell when you're underground).  On the first day I hollowed out a large rectangular room.  This was apparently fine with the staff - I wasn't spec'ed and no one said anything.

The next day I started work on making the rectangular room into someone more resembling a natural cave.  I worked about an hour on roughing up the walls and floors and adding stalactites.  But then I had to go.  I'm a grad student - a pretty stereotypically demanding job (at least in the sciences, screw you humanity majors).

I was spec'ed sometime after I logged out for, well, something.  Even after talking with staff no one can tell me precisely why my cave was against the rules.

Here's my first problem with your policies: I was spec'ed (I think) because I couldn't complete my project in one evening.  I agree - it probably looked pretty bad.  But it wasn't finished.  I think you are too willing to spec people for something when they are not there to explain their actions.

After appealing I was put on probation for 7 days (interestingly longer than someone who appealed immediately before me and claimed he got the account from a friend who griefed...)  I can't be active for seven days in a row.  Sorry, but I have work.  And I wasn't a "serious" player in the first place.  I'd go on binges when I had time - build a lot, then back to research.

So that's my second problem with your policies - while probation is generally a good idea for evaluating people, 7 days in a row is too much for some (possibly in general, older) players.  We just don't have time.

Once again, I really like your servers.  I'll miss playing here and I wanted to leave some (hopefully) constructive criticism before I left.

I think it is unfair if you

I think it is unfair if you get spec'd for not serving your probation, you should just have  it late, I mean, I'm still on probation for 6 days from a D3 server from like a month ago.

Well...

Well here's the thing: You were not spectated for leaving something unbuilt. You were spectated for mass grief. I figured maybe it was the hole you were talking about, why not give you a second chance? I then went through policy and procedure informing you that you had to serve 7 days consecutively. I asked you if you had any problem at all with it, and you said to me that you had no problem. When I get in-server to apply said probation, you then start to have a problem. You then become rude and storm out of IRC. Many people witnessed it and they'll have logs to share if you don't believe yourself or me.

As to the reason of the 7 days, since I do most appeals, I've set up a sort of pattern or guide in how to judge: Minor acts get 3 days; not minor, but not serious acts get 4-5 days depending on which side of minor or serious they border; 7 days for serious acts, and 10 days+ for grave acts.

The guy below you had done minor griefing, so he would have been granted 3 days. Seeing as how we have too many "siblings" "hack their account", it was raised to 5.

You are being not constructive, but hypocritical. You had no problem at all, and then somehow, a problem was had. If you had a valid problem/circumstance in the first place, you should have told me when I asked, not seconds before I went in-server to apply and try to remedy this.

As well, what would you prefer we do? Leave the grief there and wait for them to maybe come back and explain their actions? Just look at the spectator list. Those are people who griefed and wouldn't or have not yet explained their actions. Most likely, more than half of them never will. We are anti-grief. We make sure the logs check out before spectating. Every single user spectated has been spectated for a then valid or currently valid reason. We don't just go off willy-nilly.

EDIT: Spectate logs straight from the server database:

It's because everyone else in

It's because everyone else in the server agreed that you WERE trolling, when it came into debate. Then you put little effort into your appeals.
