(Note: Competition HAS NOT started yet, but you are free to get started if you wish, i still need to find staff judges, and get full permission, but please leave you support for the contest on this thread so i can see if it will work out!)
If i get more than 20 submissions, the competition ends at the end of march!
Hello, if you are reading this, you have just stumbled upon the SMP build of the month thread!
I had an idea recently to do a top build competition in SMP. The idea of this "competition" is to encourage awesome looking builds throughout the map. The builds won't just be judged on size, or resource need, but on; colour choice, block choice (yes, they are different), overall "theme" (i.e. castle, ship, house, or whatever, as long as it goes together), and completion (if you build is unfinished, or look that way, you will not be rated as highly) which also essential means tidiness. So, now that you know what we are looking for, lets get into the rules!
- There is no build too big, or too small. I don't care if its 5x5, if you did a good job you can win, but large builds do look more impressive tipicaly.
- Builds CAN NOT be altered after submission.
- Only one submission per player, but multiple players can work on one submission.
- Your submission DOES NOT need to be exclusive to the competition, but each build can only be used once. (You can use your house for all I care, but you can't use it for the next competition)
- Your submission can only be one building (I'm not going to count a city as a build, UNLESS you are the only one involved in making it).
- You must get in your submission before the end of the month (the last day of the current month).
- You CAN NOT use other people builds, that includes using builds you have seen on MCForum or anywhere else. But, it is allowed to use ideas from other builds
- And, as if i really have to say this, but griefing of ANY kind in this competition is completely forbidden! and WILL result in a ban from our servers.
Failure to follow these rules will result in disqualification, and your fee will not be returned!
Fee you ask? Why yes there is a $1 000 fee to pay to enter. This is for 2 reasons. One being that it shows you are serious, and not wasting my time. 2 prizes! You think i would set up a competition and have no reward? Well, I'm not evil Yenwood, so prizes are as follows!
1st Place: 50% of the total amount of fees received (ex. fees = 1000, 1000 x 0.5 = 500, so you would get 500 if the total amount of fees was 1000)
2nd Place: 35% of total fees (follow the equation above, just replace 0.5 with 0.35)
3rd Place: 15% of total fees (follow the equation for the first prize, just replace 0.5 with 0.15)
Anyone lower than 3rd will not have a cash reward, but 4th and 5th will get the runner up position, and be announced with the winners.
Step 1: /mail send captmack , and post that you have entered (no need to put your coords to keep your build private) on this page.
Step 2: When myself, or another judge is online AND active, send them the $1 000 fee, and be sure to confirm that they have received it. The judge should update the competitors list once you have done so.
Step 3: Don't touch your build and wait for the winner to be announced!
So, now that I've rambled on forever, and you are on the ground snoring, Lets get this show on the road! Have fun, and good luck to all competitors!

Thank you for reading! If I missed something or if you have a question, feel free to leave a reply about it. Good luck and may the best builder win!
Would more people be interested if i removed the fee, there would also be no prizes anymore though.
A better way to do prizes would be.
A minimum fee of $100 is required to enter the contest, but you can enter more if you want.
1st place = 10x fee
2nd place = 5x fee
3rd place = 2x fee
Which would make the prize for a $100 entry:
1st = $1000
2nd = $500
3rd = $200
And to prevent farming on the contest you can set a max fee and/or ban the 1st place user from entering the next month's contest.
The way capt has, he isn't giving away any money that wasn't in the game already. As opposed to having to make more money to give away a prize. Also, the more people that enter, the more money that can be made.
The way you have it, what if only a couple people entered? Then someone would be getting 10x their entry fee, without having hardly any competition.
Then adjust the multiplier
5 people submit valid entries
1st 3
2nd 2.5
3rd 2
10 people submit valid entries
1st 5
2nd 4
3rd 3
15 people submit valid entries
1st 8
2nd 6
3rd 4
etc...
The way it is now the prizes aren't really substantial.
10 people enter with $100 fees
1st place is only $500, a 5x increase
2nd is $250 a 1.5x increase
3rd is $150 a 0.5x increase
There isn't really any reason to participate with what capt expected it to be. If someone submits their dunky little house into the contest they lose $100. It's too high loss for too low reward.
The fee isn't just for prizes. It's to insure anyone can enter, yet still be serious enough, and have the money/resources to mae it good. I could entirely remove prizes and remove he fee, bu then i have people entering theire "one of a kind nd dirt block." The prizes are so I don't get, or lose money here, as this is not a server funded event i need to breakfast even. Finaly, the prize money you described is way off, top prize will almost always be above 10000 as i want to have close to 20 peple conpeting per month.
As i posted above, i am willing to remove fees and prizes if thats what you guys would rather
A $100 fee for 20 people is only $2000
1st place is only $1000
You also need to plan for everything that might happen, not just what you think might happen. If only 5 people enter or if 600 people enter and everything in between.
It makes it different that you're hosting this on your own and not being endorsed by the server though, do it how you want it just doesn't seem worth the effort for a player to participate.
Removing prizes would make the competition almost pointless, so don't do that. I like the original idea of everyone putting their money in a "pot" and the winners getting percents of the total money entered.
COMPETITION FOR NEXT MONTH HAS STARTED! You can now submit builds for the end of next month! Get to work on them so you can place in the top 5!!!!
Also did some formatting updates, thanks to yen
I'll enter the competition, but I don't know what or where I'm going to build yet :D
If we're going to spend this thread argueing about who "owns" the contest, I might aswell just lock the thing.
Quit fighting already, you guys.
WoM Coins: 28
I'm interested for the initial contest. So I'll join the first one and see about other ones
